Forgetting the Past…

Isaiah 43:16-19

This is what the Lord says—he who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters,

who drew out the chariots and horses, the army and reinforcements together, and they lay there, never to rise again, extinguished, snuffed out like a wick:

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.

God says to the Israelites that He is the one who took them through the Red Sea and brought them safely on the other side. God is the one who took out the enemy and kept them safe. Now we need to forget the past and move forward and see what God is doing now! See that God is making a new way for us. Whatever comes about God is working and God is working a path for us. Whatever “wasteland” there is God is providing streams for us to drink.

With this bit of commentary, I can see many things that relate to my life and the lives of others. Take a close look. I know for me, I am at a point in my life that God has in the past taken care of me. He has taken care of me despite the enemy and brought me through to the other side. My son was young, I had just been saved, I was no longer with his mother, she was now with someone new, and I was all alone. There were times when I was lonely, fighting for him and fearful for both me and my son.

Those times had past, God has brought me forth much better, and where I saw no streams God provided them in times of the deepest parchment. Now I am at another time in my life, due to my own sinfulness that I must walk through. I am in a way in the deepest darkest desert and I can’t find my way. What this passage has done is encouraged me to look to what God is doing now. I am to forget my past, my errors and look to what God is doing.

I am desperately wanting to hold on to what I have but if I don’t let God and let God change both my heart and life I don’t think I will achieve God’s will for my life. I must realize God is making streams in the wasteland for me to drink and He is taking me to the next area in which I am to learn and grow and serve Him.

Is there something in your life today that God is trying to show you? Do you not perceive what God is doing that his new? Look to Him and ask if you cannot and He will show you as He is showing me. If this is a dark time and or you are in a desert, look to God as He is providing streams so that you can drink and be revived.

John 12:23-25 also talks about the grain of wheat that must die in order for new life to come. “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.” God is making a new way.
