Press On Don’t Hold On

Many of us live in the past. This is by our own choice. Yes, OUR OWN CHOICE! We bog ourselves down with I wish I had…, I should have…, but they hurt me or my family or my child…, I’ve made too many mistakes…, it didn’t work in the past why try again…, and the list goes on and on. Along with those negative thoughts are the emotional strongholds that Satan uses against us…guilt, anger, resentment, bitterness, feeling worthless, hopelessness. These lies are straight from the pit of hell and will remain wrapped around our hearts and minds stunting our spiritual potential and growth and even our relationship with God for as long as we allow. Satan uses our mind to defeat us, to prevent us living the life of freedom that we have in Christ. Satan is the Father of Lies (John 8:44). In fact, the Bible says that “When he lies he is consistent with his character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” It is up to US as individuals to deal with these things.  The Lord said to Cain in Genesis 4:7 “…Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.” (NLT) Now granted we, in and of ourselves are not capable but God has promised to grant us success through Him. We do not have to go it alone! “For I can do EVERYTHING through Christ who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13 NLT)

Galatians 5:1 says “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” (NIV)  That freedom includes being free from anything that enslaves us. We are free from bondage to sin. Free from guilt. Free from feeling worthless. Free from feeling hopeless. Once we are in Christ our sins are forgotten by God. He does not hold them against us and does not want us to live with chains hanging from our necks that do not exist in His eyes. Ultimately we are free to live the life that we were created for. The Bible says that we were “created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10b NIV) How can we expect to do those good works that are in the future when we refuse to let go of the past? We cannot change the past. We repent. We forgive ourselves and others. We move forward.

There are good things in our future that we do not want to miss out on. So the question remains: How do we begin to live that life of freedom of good works that God has for us? The apostle Paul said, “I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” (Philippians 3:12b-14 NLT) That’s right, FORGET THE PAST, but don’t stop there.  Focus your eyes on living for Christ at all times…PRESS ON, PRESS FORWARD. All the good stuff is ahead of you still.  All those mistakes, disappointments, hurts, anger, resentment, bitterness, fear, doubt, and guilt from the past…LET IT GO, God has, and PRESS ON TOWARD YOUR HEAVENLY PRIZE! Is it easy? No, not always. Is it worth it? DEFINITELY! When I visualize Paul pressing on I see him, leaning forward, eyes straight ahead focused on the course…always watching for danger, digging in with his feet, determination on his face, and giving it everything he has. He may be running into the wind, but he’s not dragging baggage behind him. His chains are long gone.  I can see him straining, with sweat running down his red face, jumping hurdles, dodging pot holes, ignoring the jeers and boos of those who so desperately want to see him fail or at least stumble. Ignoring his thorn in the flesh.  Pushing even harder during the toughest spots on the course.  Then the race is done. He gets his heavenly prize…his reward…his inheritance. I see him reaching heaven, the saints are cheering for him. He is jumping up and down. He is a victor. He successfully finished the course and has eternity to enjoy with his Savior. You see, Paul knew that the best was yet to come.

Each of us, as a child of God has that same reality…a prize at the end of the race, eternity to enjoy with our Savior.  So, why be repressed by our past when our destiny is freedom for starting now through all eternity?
