What are Works?

Works are the byproduct of God’s creation.

Ephesians 2:10 says that we are His workmanship created…to do good works or for good works.  Isa 64:8 says that “Yet, O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.”  If I am the clay and He is the potter, what God creates us to be is who we will be, and the results of what He has done are works.

Harvest Grapes by Patricia Crosstown

They are the natural fruit of His labor, they are the result of what He has done for us, what He has created in us—a new creation.  “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2Cor 5:17)  The old fruit that bore death is gone and now we are bearing fruit that brings forth life.  Romans 7:5 agree with this for it says: For when we were controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death.”

The control of our life is no longer under Satan and we are now rid of any control over us.  When Paul was on the road to Damascus, Christ interrupts and changes his life forever.  Christ’s specific address to Paul was that he was to “open the eyes” of the Gentiles ” and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.” (Acts 26:18)  When one is in Christ, this is what happens; we are turned from Satan’s power to Christ’s power and dominion.  As a result works are the byproduct of God’s creation.  Just look at all Paul did for Christ!
